Time for Real Talk (Thanks Keith from ETID for this gem).
I get so jealous this time of the year. This month is breast cancer awareness month and it seems to be a sea of pink everywhere. I love it, please don't get me wrong. Awareness has led to early detection and prevention in so many women sparing lives and giving hope.
I just wish September was a sea of teal. Ovarian cancer is known as the "silent killer". Why? It is often detected to late in the game, that many women must choose futile treatment or palliation and death.
I just wish ovarian cancer awareness had the support, funding, and cohesion that breast cancer awareness does. I do my part, but it really feels like I am changing nothing. I don't want other mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts to go through what my family has. I have nearly lost my mom several times (once was a get out the paddles it's time to shock situation) and watched her suffer from chemo, surgery, pain, and doubt.
Women. Please support breast cancer and keep checking yourself. But, please educate yourself on signs/symptoms of not only ovarian cancer but other cancers as well. Prevention and early detection is the key to hope.
